In The Next Room

Archive

In the next room explores the emotional and physical reaction to loss and the unavoidable visceral nature of grief. The performance involves me putting myself in a series of heightened physical states – out of breath, disorientated, under strain -to convey a series of emotional states authentically.

It was inspired by the poem ‘In the next room’ attributed to Henry Scott Holland and the Kubler-Ross model of five phases of grief. In the next room was performed as part of the Spill Festival National Platform in 2012.

‘So moved was I that I turned aside to hide my tears only to find another person similarly weeping – so we laughed through our tears together.
