The Butter Piece

2011

I created the performance from an interest in female sexuality and the ‘invisible’ sexual responses of women and my own experience of finding these shameful. What began as a celebration of these reactions has become something more complex which attempts to explore the terrain of how we ‘manage’ our comfort with ourselves by engaging or disengaging with the materiality of our bodies. The Butter Piece can take the form of a live performance or a durational work.

‘I’ve only seen two performances that used butter as their primary material: Melati Suryodarmo’s Butter Dance and Victoria Firth’s The Butter Piece. Both works transformed an everyday nondescript foodstuff into a dynamic, transformational substance evoking fear and laughter in equal measure.’
